About

Origin Story

Phal Pal® started as a homegrown solution to a common problem. For years, I gifted my wife orchids, but they rarely thrived. After taking over their care, I became obsessed with finding ways to make orchids bloom again. Like many hobbyists, I invested in expensive mixes and followed all the advice, but still struggled with plants leaning over—despite endless hacks with stakes and strings or ribbons.

In need of a solution, I invented the Phal Pal – a patent-pending orchid support device that leverages the structure of the plant’s pot to push the plant straight, instead of pulling (and strangling) the plant using a stake and ribbon or string.

It worked so well I decided to see if it could help other orchid growers, so I listed it on Etsy, and they immediately took off. Despite being in a tight niche, people snapped them up in multiples. The need was verified and the feedback was so good, I took the next steps getting a patent started and registering the Phal Pal brand Trademark.

Phal Pal was developed through my work with Laser Inspired LLC, a small North Carolina–based business I own and operate, focused on custom laser engraving for promotional items, signage, and personalized products. That background made it possible to quickly prototype and refine a solution—building and testing ideas directly rather than adapting existing gardening tools. Today, Laser Inspired remains the operating company behind Phal Pal, supporting its design, production, and ongoing improvement.

What is the Phal Pal and how is it made?

Phal Pal is a small, independently operated product line focused on improving orchid stability through simple mechanical design. It was specifically designed to support orchids that have recently been re-potted and need a little help until their roots develop enough to hold themselves up straight.

It was important that the design not only achieves the primary goal, but also meets the following objectives:

  • Should be as simple and inconspicuous as possible

  • Be made of materials that will not degrade with exposure to water or UV light

  • Be adaptable in support requirements

  • Be optimized to minimize cost to consumer

The device itself is made of clear acrylic that is precisely laser-cut to fit on the rim of the popular plastic orchid pots on the market today. It features a split, 2-piece ‘mount’ that forms a saddle for the rim of the pot. Connected to the mount is an articulating arm, connected with a nylon screw & nut. At the end of the arm is a pivoting ‘head’ that makes contact with the plant to provide the support. The Phal Pal can provide support from any angle and direction that far exceeds what is possible with traditional stakes and ties.

Phal Pal is not affiliated with or endorsed by any third-party pot manufacturers. See our available configurations in the shop.
